Overview
Bluebird Fiber, formerly known as Bluebird Network, is a premier communications infrastructure provider headquartered in Columbia, Missouri. The company operates a vast and growing fiber-optic network spanning over 11,000 route miles across the Midwest, including Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, Iowa, and surrounding states. With a history rooted in the consolidation of several regional networks, Bluebird has evolved into a powerhouse that connects major rural and urban hubs, including St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield, Tulsa, and Des Moines.
The company serves a diverse clientele ranging from small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) and large corporations to government agencies, healthcare institutions, and educational facilities. A significant portion of their business is also dedicated to the wholesale carrier market, providing essential backhaul and transport services for mobile operators and other telecommunications providers.
Bluebird’s service portfolio is built on three core pillars: high-speed fiber-optic connectivity, specialized data center services, and managed network solutions. Their flagship facility, the Bluebird Underground Data Center in Springfield, MO, provides a unique colocation environment that leverages natural geological formations for cooling and security. Over the past decade, Bluebird has aggressively expanded through both organic network builds and strategic acquisitions, positioning itself as the dominant independent provider of high-bandwidth solutions in the American heartland. Their focus remains steadfast on delivering carrier-grade reliability with a localized service touch.
Positioning
Bluebird Fiber positions itself as the "Midwest’s Infrastructure Powerhouse," strategically filling the gap between massive, impersonal national carriers and smaller, localized ISPs that lack the scale for enterprise-grade demands. Their messaging centers on the concepts of reliability, local expertise, and "underground" security. By rebranding from Bluebird Network to Bluebird Fiber, the company has sharpened its focus on its core asset—the physical fiber path—positioning itself as the foundational layer for all other digital transformations.
Their competitive strategy targets organizations that require high-availability connectivity but feel underserved by the customer service models of national incumbents. Bluebird’s brand positioning emphasizes that they are "large enough to lead, but small enough to care." They differentiate from competitors by highlighting their ownership of the "last mile" and the "middle mile," giving them end-to-end control over latency and uptime. In the data center space, they position their underground facilities as the gold standard for disaster recovery and business continuity, appealing specifically to sectors with stringent compliance and security requirements like finance and healthcare. Overall, Bluebird positions itself not just as a vendor, but as a regional economic engine that empowers Midwest businesses to compete on a global scale.
Differentiation
The primary product differentiator for Bluebird Fiber is the sheer density and strategic layout of its 11,000+ mile fiber-optic network. While many providers rely on leased lines or overhead infrastructure, Bluebird’s network is largely underground and wholly owned, providing superior protection against environmental factors and physical interference. This infrastructure supports symmetrical speeds up to 100 Gbps, catering to the intensive data needs of modern enterprises and wholesale carriers.
A unique technical advantage is the seamless integration between their fiber transport and their state-of-the-art data centers, including the Bluebird Underground Data Center. Located 85 feet below the earth's surface in a solid limestone mine, this facility offers a level of natural protection against natural disasters (such as tornadoes and extreme temperatures) that surface-level facilities cannot match.

- Non-Recurring Charges (NRC): One-time installation fees. These may be waived or reduced in exchange for longer contract commitments.
- Construction Costs/Special Construction: If your facility requires a significant fiber build-out, there may be upfront costs, though Bluebird often amortizes these into the MRC for enterprise clients.
- Data Center Pricing: Colocation is priced by the rack (U-space), power consumption (kW), and cross-connect requirements.
- Custom Quotes: Due to the geographic nature of fiber, pricing is highly site-specific. Multi-site discounts are common for regional deployments.
Technical Requirements
To utilize Bluebird Fiber services, the following technical environment is typically required:
- Demarcation Point (Demarc): A climate-controlled, secure space (IDF or MDF) with adequate rack space for Bluebird’s Network Interface Device (NID).
- Power Requirements: Standard 110v or 220v AC power (with UPS backup highly recommended) to power the fiber termination equipment.
- Cabling: Internal Cat6 or Fiber (Single-mode/Multi-mode) cabling from the Bluebird demarc to your internal router or switch.
- Hardware Compatibility: A router or firewall capable of handling the contracted throughput (e.g., a 10Gbps circuit requires a router with 10GbE SFP+ ports).
- IP Space: Requirements for static IPv4 or IPv6 blocks must be defined during the ordering process. Bluebird can provide provider-assigned (PA) space or announce your provider-independent (PI) space via BGP.
Business Requirements
To successfully implement Bluebird Fiber services, organizations should meet the following prerequisites:
- Stakeholder Buy-in: Alignment between IT and Facilities is critical, as physical fiber installation often requires site surveys, conduit access, and potential construction permits.
- Network Engineering Expertise: While Bluebird manages the transport, your internal team should have the skills to configure edge routers, firewalls, and internal VLANs to utilize the high-speed handoff effectively.
- Process Readiness: For projects involving construction, organizations must have a clear internal process for approving right-of-way or building access agreements.
- Change Management: If migrating from a legacy copper or lower-speed provider, teams should be prepared for the increased capacity, potentially requiring upgrades to internal hardware (switches/WAPs) to prevent bottlenecks.
Implementation Timeline
A typical Bluebird Fiber implementation follows these phases:
- Discovery & Site Survey (1-2 weeks): Engineers assess the physical location to determine if the building is "on-net" (already connected) or "near-net" (requiring a lateral build).
- Design & Contracting (1-2 weeks): Finalizing circuit specifications, diversity requirements, and service level agreements (SLAs).
- Permitting & Construction (4-12 weeks): If a new fiber build is required, this phase involves local government permits and physical trenching/boring. Note: "On-net" buildings bypass this phase.
- Equipment Installation & Splicing (1-2 week): Installing the Network Interface Device (NID) and completing the fiber fusion splicing.
- Testing & Turn-up (3-5 days): End-to-end testing to ensure the circuit meets the committed bandwidth and latency parameters before formal handoff. Total timeline ranges from 30 days for existing fiber to 90+ days for complex new builds.
