Meter: Scalable Enterprise Internet and WiFi Infrastructure
Meter provides end-to-end Network-as-a-Service solutions for businesses, combining custom hardware, software, and operations to deliver seamless connectivity.
Overview
Meter is a leader in the Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) category, providing a comprehensive solution that integrates hardware, software, and operations to manage internet and networking for businesses. Founded in 2015 and headquartered in San Francisco, Meter was established on the premise that enterprise networking is unnecessarily complex, expensive, and fragmented. The company’s mission is to make high-quality networking infrastructure accessible and effortless for organizations ranging from fast-growing startups to large-scale industrial enterprises.
Meter’s core offering covers the entire networking lifecycle: professional design, hardware procurement, installation, and ongoing maintenance. Their product stack includes high-performance wireless access points, switches, and security appliances, all managed through a proprietary cloud-based dashboard. Beyond hardware, Meter provides "Network Operations" as a service, which includes 24/7 monitoring, proactive troubleshooting, and ISP management.
The company serves a diverse range of industries, including modern office spaces, warehouses, manufacturing facilities, and retail environments. By consolidating the roles of a hardware vendor, an Internet Service Provider (ISP) aggregator, and a Managed Service Provider (MSP), Meter simplifies the vendor landscape for IT leaders. Their presence in the market has grown significantly due to their ability to reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) while improving network reliability and performance. Meter is backed by prominent investors including Sequoia Capital, Lachy Groom, and Sam Altman, signaling its position as a disruptive force in the multi-billion dollar networking industry.
Positioning
Meter positions itself as the modern alternative to the "fragmented legacy" of traditional networking. Their market strategy is built on the transition from CapEx-heavy infrastructure to an OpEx-based utility model. While competitors like Cisco Meraki or Aruba focus on selling feature-rich hardware that requires certified experts to manage, Meter positions its solution as a comprehensive outcome: "The network that just works."
Their messaging targets three primary personas:
- The Overburdened IT Manager: Focusing on "giving time back" by automating mundane tasks like firmware updates, ISP troubleshooting, and hardware refreshes.
- The CFO/Operations Leader: Emphasizing predictable monthly pricing with no upfront capital expenditure and a lower total cost of ownership.
- The Real Estate/Facilities Executive: Highlighting the speed of deployment and the ability to scale networking across multiple sites without managing dozens of local vendors.
In the competitive landscape, Meter differentiates by removing the "middlemen." They position themselves against the traditional model of buying hardware from a VAR (Value Added Reseller) and hiring an MSP to manage it. By owning the entire stack, Meter claims a superior ability to diagnose and resolve issues, positioning their brand as a partner in business growth rather than just a hardware supplier. Their branding is clean, minimalist, and focused on simplicity, contrasting with the technical complexity often promoted by legacy enterprise networking firms.
Differentiation
The primary differentiator of Meter’s product suite is its vertical integration of hardware, software, and services into a single, cohesive platform. Unlike traditional networking stacks that require stitching together hardware from one vendor, security software from another, and ISP management from a third, Meter provides a unified solution.
Key product advantages include:
- Custom-Engineered Hardware: Meter designs its own access points, switches, and controllers. This allows for tighter integration between the physical layer and the cloud-based management software, leading to faster troubleshooting and more reliable firmware updates.
- The Meter Dashboard: A centralized, intuitive interface that gives IT teams granular visibility into their entire global network footprint. It simplifies complex tasks like VLAN configuration, DNS security, and VPN management into a few clicks.
- Automated Site Surveys and Design: Meter utilizes proprietary software to automate the radio frequency (RF) planning and cabling design process, ensuring optimal coverage and performance before a single cable is pulled.
- Integrated Security: Security is not an add-on but is baked into the core architecture, featuring built-in firewalls, encrypted tunneling, and automated security patching.
- ISP Management: One of Meter’s most unique features is its ability to act as the interface for Internet Service Providers. They handle the procurement, billing, and support for the circuits themselves, providing a "single pane of glass" for both local networking and wide-area connectivity.
