NTT Global Data Centers: Secure Colocation & Hybrid Cloud Solutions
NTT Global Data Centers provides enterprise-grade colocation and interconnection services across a massive global footprint for hyperscalers and large enterprises.
Overview
NTT Global Data Centers, a division of NTT Ltd., is one of the world’s largest providers of data center services, operating a sprawling network of facilities across North America, Europe, Africa, and the Asia-Pacific region. As a top-tier global player, the company offers a comprehensive suite of colocation, interconnection, and infrastructure services designed to meet the rigorous demands of hyperscalers, large enterprises, and service providers.
The vendor’s market presence is characterized by rapid expansion and the strategic development of large-scale data center campuses in key global hubs. NTT’s history is rooted in the long-standing telecommunications heritage of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, which has evolved into a global technology powerhouse. Today, the data center division serves as the foundational layer for NTT’s broader portfolio, which includes networking, cloud, and managed security services.
Targeting organizations that require high-availability infrastructure, NTT provides scalable solutions ranging from individual racks to dedicated wholesale data halls. Their business focus is centered on providing "full-stack" infrastructure solutions—coupling physical space and power with deep expertise in global networking. This allows clients to build resilient, distributed architectures that can support digital transformation initiatives, big data analytics, and mission-critical applications on a global scale. With a commitment to innovation and sustainability, NTT continues to lead the market in developing next-generation data centers that balance performance with environmental responsibility.
Positioning
NTT Global Data Centers positions itself as the "Global Engine for Digital Transformation." Their competitive strategy is built upon the pillars of global scale, local expertise, and integrated technology services. While competitors often focus solely on the real estate aspect of data centers, NTT positions its facilities as part of a wider, integrated technology stack. This messaging emphasizes that NTT doesn't just provide a building; they provide the critical infrastructure and connectivity that power the global digital economy.
Their brand positioning focuses on "Reliability at Scale." They target two primary segments:
- Hyperscalers: To whom they market their ability to deliver massive capacity, rapid speed-to-market, and customized engineering.
- Global Enterprises: To whom they market their high-security standards, global consistency, and the ability to bundle data center services with NTT’s broader network and managed services.
In their messaging, NTT differentiates itself from competitors like Equinix or Digital Realty by highlighting their status as a "Total ICT Provider." They leverage their parent company’s Tier-1 IP network and global service delivery capabilities to argue that they can provide a more seamless and holistic experience than pure-play colocation providers. Their positioning is heavily anchored in trust and longevity, appealing to organizations that view their data center partner as a long-term strategic asset rather than a commodity vendor.
Differentiation
The NTT Global Data Centers product suite is defined by its massive scale, standardized excellence, and high-density capabilities. With over 1,500 MW of IT load capacity across more than 20 countries, NTT offers one of the largest and most consistent data center footprints in the world. A key technical advantage is their "Global Data Center Platform," which provides a standardized design and operational framework across all regions. This ensures that a client in Ashburn receives the same level of operational excellence, security, and reporting as a client in Frankfurt or Tokyo.
Unique features include:
- High-Density Cooling: Their facilities are engineered to support the increasing power demands of AI and high-performance computing (HPC), offering advanced liquid cooling and air-cooling configurations.
- Interconnected Ecosystem: NTT’s Tier-1 Global IP Network provides seamless, low-latency connectivity between data centers and to various cloud service providers (CSPs) and internet exchange points (IXPs).
- Security and Compliance: Their "Global Standard" for physical security includes multi-layered biometric access, 24/7 onsite security teams, and rigorous compliance certifications (SOC 1/2, ISO 27001, PCI DSS, etc.) across all sites.
- Sustainability Innovation: NTT is a pioneer in utilizing renewable energy sources, water-cooling recycling systems, and energy-efficient building designs (LEED/BREEAM) to reduce the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of their facilities.
These technical advantages allow NTT to support the most demanding workloads of hyperscale cloud providers and global financial institutions with unmatched reliability.

Pricing Models
NTT typically employs a transparent, enterprise-grade pricing structure:
- Space (Monthly Recurring): Charges based on the number of racks, square footage of a private cage, or dedicated wholesale suite.
- Power (Consumption or Fixed): Pricing is usually based on a "Power Draw" model (kW) or "Metered Power," where customers pay for actual electricity used plus a multiplier for cooling and infrastructure.
- Cross-Connects: Flat monthly fees for physical connections to carriers, other tenants, or cloud on-ramps.
- Set-up/NRC (Non-Recurring Costs): Initial fees for cage construction, rack installation, and initial cabling.
- Smart Hands: Available as a monthly retainer (discounted rate) or on-demand hourly billing for technical tasks.
- Contract Terms: Standard contracts are 3–5 years, with wholesale/hyperscale agreements often extending to 10+ years.
Technical Requirements
Before deploying hardware within an NTT facility, customers must verify the following:
- Rack Compatibility: Standard 19-inch racks are typical, but custom dimensions must be cleared for floor load capacity and airflow management.
- Power Requirements: Specification of A+B redundant power feeds (e.g., 208V, 415V) and plug types (e.g., L6-30P).
- Cooling Needs: Alignment with ASHRAE standards; customers must ensure equipment is configured for front-to-back airflow (hot aisle/cold aisle containment).
- Cabling Standards: Use of specific fiber (OM4/OS2) or copper (Cat6A) grades for internal cross-connects.
- Network Equipment: Routers and switches must support the handoffs provided by NTT’s GDCI or chosen carriers (e.g., 10G/100G Ethernet).
Business Requirements
To successfully partner with NTT, organizations should ensure the following business prerequisites are met:
- Capacity Planning Expertise: Organizations need internal facilities or IT infrastructure teams capable of projecting long-term power and rack-space requirements to avoid over-provisioning or mid-contract expansion friction.
- Vendor Management: Ability to manage a global master service agreement (MSA) while coordinating with local site contacts for physical access and equipment delivery.
- Financial Readiness: Budgetary approval for long-term capital or operational expenditure, as colocation contracts typically span 3 to 10 years.
- Logistics Coordination: A defined process for "Smart Hands" coordination, ensuring that remote teams can effectively communicate technical instructions to on-site NTT technicians.
- Governance and Compliance Alignment: Internal legal and audit teams must be prepared to review NTT’s SOC and ISO reports to ensure they meet the organization’s specific risk management frameworks.
Implementation Timeline
A typical implementation for a new colocation footprint follows this timeline:
- Phase 1: Discovery & Design (2–4 Weeks): Evaluation of power density (kW per rack), cooling requirements, and network topology. Selection of specific data center halls and cage layouts.
- Phase 2: Contracting & Procurement (4–8 Weeks): Legal review of the MSA and Service Level Agreements (SLAs). Finalizing power pricing and space commitments.
- Phase 3: Fit-Out & Setup (4–12 Weeks): Installation of physical racks, cages, and structured cabling. This phase varies significantly based on the complexity of the custom build-out.
- Phase 4: Connectivity & Migration (2–6 Weeks): Establishing cross-connects to carriers and cloud on-ramps. Physical migration of hardware (lift-and-shift) or deployment of new equipment.
- Phase 5: Go-Live & Handover (1 Week): Final testing of redundant power feeds, environmental monitoring setup, and training on the customer portal.
Support Options
NTT provides a tiered support structure designed for mission-critical operations:
- Global Service Desk (GSD): A centralized, 24/7/365 point of contact for incidents, service requests, and facility information.
