NYI: Custom Edge Infrastructure and Managed Hybrid Cloud Solutions
NYI provides flexible hybrid infrastructure solutions, including colocation and cloud services, for enterprises requiring high-touch engineering and customization.
Overview
NYI (New York Internet) is a specialized infrastructure provider that has been a staple of the East Coast technology landscape since its founding in 1996. Headquartered in New York City, the company has evolved from a traditional ISP into a comprehensive provider of hybrid IT solutions. NYI’s core business focuses on delivering colocation, cloud computing, and managed services out of strategically located data centers in key markets, including New York and New Jersey, with a global reach through partner facilities.
The company serves a diverse clientele ranging from high-growth startups to established enterprises in the financial services, media, healthcare, and legal sectors. NYI’s primary value proposition is its ability to solve complex infrastructure challenges that don't fit into the standardized boxes of large-scale public clouds. Over nearly three decades, NYI has maintained a reputation for reliability and technical excellence, positioning itself as a stable, long-term partner for organizations that view their IT infrastructure as a competitive advantage. Their service suite is designed to handle the entire lifecycle of enterprise IT, from initial architecture and migration to ongoing management and scaling.
Positioning
NYI positions itself as the "Anti-Hyperscaler," targeting mid-market and enterprise organizations that have grown frustrated with the complexity, hidden costs, and impersonal nature of providers like AWS or Azure. Their market strategy is built on the concept of "Infrastructure as a Service, Managed by Humans." In their messaging, NYI emphasizes transparency and partnership, positioning themselves as a consultant-first provider rather than a mere commodity utility.
They compete by focusing on the "Hybrid Reality"—the fact that most enterprises cannot move 100% to the public cloud due to latency, security, or cost concerns. NYI fills the gap by positioning their facilities as the central hub for these hybrid ecosystems. Their brand is synonymous with reliability and accessibility; they position their physical proximity to major financial hubs and their deep engineering expertise as critical assets for businesses where downtime is not an option. By focusing on customization and direct accountability, NYI differentiates itself from both the rigid large-scale cloud providers and the impersonal, real-estate-focused colocation giants.
Differentiation
The NYI product portfolio is anchored by its ability to bridge the gap between physical and virtual environments. Their core offerings include mission-critical colocation, private cloud, and managed services, but their true technical advantage lies in their "Cross-Platform" integration. Unlike standard colocation providers, NYI offers a seamless fabric that connects on-premises hardware with multi-cloud environments via low-latency, high-performance networking.
A key differentiator is their NYI Cross-Connect ecosystem, which provides robust connectivity to major carriers and cloud on-ramps without the predatory egress fees often associated with larger vendors. Additionally, their Managed Services go beyond simple monitoring; they provide deep-stack management including OS-level support, database administration, and security compliance. Their infrastructure is characterized by high-density power capabilities and carrier-neutrality, allowing for highly resilient and scalable architectures that can support demanding workloads like fintech, media streaming, and healthcare data.
Ideal Customer Profile
The ideal NYI customer is a mid-market to enterprise organization that has outgrown the "one-size-fits-all" approach of major public clouds or massive, faceless colocation providers. They typically operate in highly regulated or performance-sensitive industries such as FinTech, AdTech, Media, or Healthcare. These companies value a partnership model where they can pick up the phone and speak directly to a senior engineer. Technically, they often have a hybrid infrastructure strategy, requiring a mix of physical hardware and cloud flexibility, and they prioritize high-reliability New York or Chicago metro-area footprints. Budget-wise, they are looking for predictable costs and high ROI rather than the lowest-bidder commodity pricing.
Best Fit
- Hybrid Cloud Transitions: NYI excels for companies moving away from 100% public cloud who need a 'landing zone' for predictable workloads while maintaining high-speed connectivity to AWS or Azure.
- High-Touch Managed Services: Ideal for organizations with lean IT teams that require 'smart hands' and consultative engineering rather than just a rack and power.
- Low-Latency Edge Requirements: Businesses operating in the New York/New Jersey or Chicago metro areas that require sub-millisecond latency for financial services, media streaming, or real-time applications.
- Custom Infrastructure Design: When off-the-shelf colocation or cloud packages fail to meet specific power density, cooling, or hardware configuration requirements.
Offerings
- Colocation: Flexible space from single cabinets to custom-built private suites in NY and Chicago.
- Managed Services: Full-stack management of OS, databases, and network security, acting as an extension of the client's IT team.
- Cloud Solutions: NYI Managed Private Cloud (VMware-based) and Public Cloud Interconnects.
- Bare Metal: On-demand, dedicated physical servers with customizable CPU, RAM, and Storage configurations.
- Connectivity: Blended IP transit, Point-to-Point circuits, and access to major Internet Exchanges (NYIIX).
- Disaster Recovery: DRaaS and Backup-as-a-Service (BaaS) powered by industry-leading software like Zerto or Veeam.

- Enterprise DR: Establishing a secondary site in NYI’s Chicago facility to ensure geographic redundancy for a primary East Coast headquarters.
Pricing Models
- Colocation Pricing: Typically based on a combination of space (U-count, Half-Rack, Full-Rack), Power (per kW or per Amp), and Connectivity (Cross-connects and blended bandwidth).
- Managed Services: Often structured as a monthly recurring fee based on the complexity and scope of the environment being managed.
- Cloud & Bare Metal: Utility-based pricing or fixed monthly commitments depending on the predictability of the workload.
- Variable Costs: One-time setup fees (NRC), professional service hours for migrations, and additional 'Smart Hands' requests outside of standard inclusive packages.
- Contract Terms: NYI generally favors 12, 24, or 36-month agreements, with discounts available for longer commitments.
Technical Requirements
- Hardware Compatibility: For colocation, equipment must fit standard 19-inch EIA racks.
- Power Requirements: Clients must specify voltage (110V/208V) and phase (Single/Three-phase) requirements.
- Network Protocols: Support for BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) is required for clients bringing their own IP space.
- OS/Software: For managed services, NYI supports major distributions (RHEL, Ubuntu, Windows Server) and virtualization platforms (VMware, KVM).
- Remote Access: VPN or SSH/RDP access is required for client-side management of logical layers.
Business Requirements
- IT Strategy Alignment: Leadership must define the balance between CapEx (owned hardware) and OpEx (managed services/cloud).
- Technical Point of Contact: While NYI provides heavy support, a designated internal lead is needed to coordinate network architecture and application requirements.
- Operational Readiness: If moving from a fully managed public cloud, your team needs to be ready to manage (or delegate to NYI) the physical lifecycle of hardware.
- Compliance Mapping: Organizations must have a clear understanding of their industry-specific compliance needs (e.g., HIPAA, PCI-DSS) to ensure NYI’s physical controls map to their logical controls.
