PS Lightwave: High-Speed Fiber Internet and Network Solutions
PS Lightwave provides high-speed fiber optic networking and data solutions for Texas enterprises, offering superior reliability through a private, local core.
Overview
PS Lightwave is a premier connectivity provider headquartered in Houston, Texas, specializing in high-capacity fiber optic networking, Internet, and data transport services. Founded in 2010, the company has established itself as a critical infrastructure partner for a wide range of industries, including healthcare, education, government, and professional services. They operate one of the largest private fiber-optic networks in the Texas Gulf Coast region, spanning thousands of route miles and connecting hundreds of on-net buildings.
The company’s core mission is to provide "Connectivity Made Effortless," a goal they achieve by managing their own physical network infrastructure rather than relying on third-party leases. Their service portfolio includes high-speed Dedicated Internet Access (DIA), Point-to-Point and Multi-point data circuits, Dark Fiber, and VoIP/Hosted PBX solutions. PS Lightwave serves a diverse client base, ranging from small businesses to large-scale school districts and municipal governments that require high-bandwidth, low-latency connections.
Over the past decade, PS Lightwave has evolved from a local startup into a major regional player, recognized for its ability to handle complex network deployments that national carriers often find too specialized. Their market presence is defined by a heavy concentration in the Greater Houston area, where they are known for supporting the digital transformation of local enterprises through robust infrastructure and personalized technical support.
Positioning
PS Lightwave positions itself as the "Local Alternative to the Giants," strategically carving out a space between small-scale local ISPs and massive national telecommunications conglomerates. Their messaging focuses on the "Power of Local," emphasizing that their network operations center (NOC) and engineering teams are based in the same region as their customers. This allows them to position themselves as more responsive, more knowledgeable about local geography/permitting, and more invested in the regional economy than national competitors like AT&T or Comcast.
In terms of market segmentation, PS Lightwave targets mid-to-large enterprises and public sector organizations that have outgrown "best-effort" broadband but want to avoid the impersonal service of a Tier 1 carrier. They differentiate their brand through a commitment to transparency and technical excellence, often highlighting their "flat" network hierarchy which minimizes points of failure.
Their competitive positioning strategy is built on three pillars:
- Reliability: Leveraging their private fiber core to guarantee higher uptime.
- Speed of Delivery: Faster installation intervals due to local control of assets.
- Personalized Support: Direct access to local technicians rather than offshore call centers.
By framing themselves as an infrastructure partner rather than just a utility provider, they appeal to IT directors and CTOs who prioritize network performance and vendor accountability over the lowest possible commodity price.
Differentiation
The primary technical differentiator for PS Lightwave is its expansive, 100% fiber-optic network that utilizes a "switched Layer 2" infrastructure. This architecture is designed for lower latency and higher security compared to traditional Layer 3 routed networks, making it particularly attractive for organizations requiring high-performance data center connectivity and real-time application support.
Key product advantages include:
- Redundant Ring Topology: Their network is engineered with multiple redundant rings, ensuring that if a fiber cut occurs, traffic is automatically rerouted to maintain uptime, often exceeding 99.999% reliability.
- Burstable Bandwidth: Unlike many rigid contracts from national providers, PS Lightwave offers flexible bandwidth options that allow clients to scale their capacity based on seasonal or project-based demand.
- Ethernet Everything: By focusing on Ethernet-based solutions (E-Line, E-LAN, and E-Tree), they simplify the integration of the customer’s LAN with the Wide Area Network (WAN), reducing the need for complex edge equipment.
- Direct Peering: They maintain strategic peering relationships and presence in major carrier-neutral data centers, which optimizes the path for cloud-bound traffic and reduces hops.
- Customized Construction: Because they own their assets, they can provide custom fiber builds and "dark fiber" solutions for organizations that require total control over their optical layer.

Pricing Models
Pricing is customized based on the specific needs of the enterprise:
- Monthly Recurring Charges (MRC): Based on bandwidth (Mbps/Gbps), the type of service (Dedicated Internet vs. Private Line), and the number of locations.
- Non-Recurring Charges (NRC): One-time installation fees that cover site surveys, engineering, and equipment setup.
- Construction Costs: If a facility is "Off-Net," there may be capital expenditure (CapEx) requirements for the fiber build-out, though these are often amortized over a long-term contract.
- Contract Terms: Typical enterprise agreements range from 36 to 60 months, with significant discounts available for longer commitments.
- Tiered Service Levels: Pricing varies depending on the chosen SLA (Service Level Agreement) and the degree of redundancy required.
Technical Requirements
To utilize PS Lightwave services, the following technical components must be in place:
- Demarcation Point: A designated space (usually a telco closet or server room) with adequate rack space, cooling, and power (AC or DC options).
- Power Requirements: Standard 110v AC power is usually required for the NID (Network Interface Device), though redundant power feeds are recommended.
- Cabling: Cat6 or higher for copper handoffs; Single-mode fiber (SMF) for fiber handoffs within the building.
- Hardware Compatibility: Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) must support the handoff type (e.g., 10G-Base-LR for fiber connections).
- IP Management: Clients must provide their own internal IP schema or request static IP assignments from PS Lightwave for internet services.
Business Requirements
To successfully implement PS Lightwave solutions, organizations should prepare the following:
- Facility Access & Right-of-Entry (ROE): For new fiber builds, businesses must have clear legal authority or landlord permission to bring fiber into the premises.
- Technical Point of Contact: A dedicated IT lead or network engineer is required to coordinate IP addressing, VLAN configurations, and hand-off specifications.
- Internal Infrastructure Readiness: Organizations must ensure their internal hardware (routers, switches, firewalls) is capable of handling the contracted speeds (e.g., SFP+ ports for 10G connections).
- Strategic Planning: For multi-site deployments, a clear map of high-priority vs. secondary sites is needed to determine the most cost-effective ring or star topology.
Implementation Timeline
The timeline for PS Lightwave deployment varies significantly based on "On-Net" vs. "Off-Net" status:
- Phase 1: Discovery & Site Survey (1-2 Weeks): Engineers assess the physical location, identify entry points, and determine if existing fiber is present.
- Phase 2: Permitting & Engineering (4-12 Weeks): If a new fiber build is required (Off-Net), this phase involves local municipality permits and construction planning. On-Net sites bypass this.
- Phase 3: Construction & Splicing (2-8 Weeks): Physical laying of fiber and splicing into the PS Lightwave backbone.
- Phase 4: Equipment Installation & Testing (1 Week): Installation of the Network Interface Device (NID) or ONT and rigorous circuit testing for throughput and latency.
- Phase 5: Go-Live & Handoff (1-2 Days): Final configuration with the client's IT team and service activation.
- Note: On-Net installations can often be completed in 15-30 days, while complex fiber builds may take 90+ days.
Support Options
PS Lightwave prides itself on a "high-touch" local support model:
- 24/7/365 Local NOC: Support is provided by Houston-based engineers, not overseas call centers.
- SLA-Backed Performance: Standard Service Level Agreements guarantee 99.9% to 99.99% uptime, with specific credits for jitter, latency, and packet loss deviations.
- Dedicated Account Management: Each enterprise client is assigned a dedicated account representative for lifecycle management and upgrades.
- Field Services: Local dispatch teams are available for physical repairs and equipment swaps, ensuring faster Mean Time to Repair (MTTR) than national carriers.
- Online Portal: Clients have access to bandwidth utilization reports and ticket management systems.
Integration Requirements
PS Lightwave provides "clean pipe" connectivity, meaning integration focuses on the physical and data link layers:
- Physical Handoffs: Supports various standards including RJ-45 (Copper) for lower speeds and LC/SC Fiber connectors for 1G, 10G, and 100G handoffs.
- Layer 2 vs. Layer 3: Buyers can choose between a transparent Layer 2 (Ethernet) bridge, allowing the client to manage their own routing, or a Layer 3 (IP) managed service.
- BGP Peering: For enterprise clients with their own IP space, PS Lightwave supports Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) for multi-homing and redundant routing.
- Cloud Connect: Direct, private connections are available to major cloud on-ramps (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) via partner data centers in the Houston area.
Security & Compliance
Security is baked into the physical and logical architecture:
- Physical Security: Since PS Lightwave owns its fiber, data does not travel over public, shared infrastructure, significantly reducing the risk of physical tapping or interception.
- Private Layer 2 Networks: Provides the ability to create completely private wide-area networks (WANs) that are logically isolated from the public internet.
- DDoS Mitigation: Optional add-on services provide real-time monitoring and scrubbing of malicious traffic to maintain uptime during attacks.
