Sky Data Vault: Managed Disaster Recovery and Backup Solutions
Sky Data Vault provides managed Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) and BaaS solutions exclusively for MSPs, featuring a fully managed, white-glove approach.
Overview
Sky Data Vault (SDV) is a premier provider of managed Data Protection and Business Continuity solutions, specifically engineered for the Managed Service Provider (MSP) channel. Founded with the mission to simplify the complexities of data backup and disaster recovery, SDV has established itself as a critical infrastructure partner for small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) who cannot afford downtime.
The company’s core service portfolio includes Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS), Backup as a Service (BaaS), and specialized protection for Microsoft 365 and hardware-as-a-service (HaaS) offerings. Unlike standard "software-only" vendors, Sky Data Vault provides a comprehensive, end-to-end managed service. This means they handle the configuration, monitoring, and—most importantly—the recovery process for their clients.
Based in the United States, SDV has grown steadily by focusing on the "Managed" aspect of the MSP acronym. They recognize that many MSPs struggle with the labor-intensive nature of backup verification and the high stakes of disaster recovery. By taking on the operational burden of these tasks, SDV allows MSPs to scale their businesses without a linear increase in headcount. Their market presence is defined by a reputation for reliability in high-pressure recovery scenarios, particularly in the face of the growing ransomware threat landscape. Over the years, they have expanded their infrastructure to support diverse workloads, ranging from on-premises physical servers to complex virtualized environments and cloud-native SaaS applications.
Positioning
Sky Data Vault positions itself as the "Expert's Expert" in the data protection market. Their strategic positioning is built on the transition from "Backup" to "Business Continuity." While many competitors market their speed of backup or cost per gigabyte, SDV focuses its messaging on the "Certainty of Recovery."
Their target market is primarily MSPs who serve compliance-heavy industries such as healthcare, legal, and finance, where data loss or prolonged downtime carries significant regulatory and financial penalties. SDV differentiates itself from "Do-It-Yourself" (DIY) tools like Veeam or Datto by positioning their service as a labor-saving partnership. Their messaging emphasizes that they are not just a vendor, but an outsourced Tier 3 engineering department.
In terms of brand positioning, Sky Data Vault leans heavily into the concept of "White Glove Service." They distinguish themselves from large-scale commodity cloud providers by highlighting their accessibility and the fact that a human engineer is involved in the validation of their recovery points. This "Managed DRaaS" positioning allows them to compete effectively against lower-cost, unmanaged alternatives by proving a lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) once labor and risk are factored in.
Differentiation
The primary technical differentiator for Sky Data Vault is their "Managed" approach to Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS). Unlike traditional Backup as a Service (BaaS) providers that provide a tool for the MSP to manage, SDV provides the service of recovery itself.
Key product differentiators include:
- Fully Managed Recovery: SDV takes responsibility for the integrity of the backups. They perform the heavy lifting of virtualization and recovery testing, ensuring that if a disaster strikes, the environment is ready to boot.
- Purpose-Built Cloud: Instead of relying solely on generic public cloud infrastructure, SDV utilizes a purpose-built cloud architecture optimized specifically for high-performance recovery and low-latency access during a failover event.
- Infinite Cloud Retention: They offer simplified pricing models that include infinite cloud retention, eliminating the complex storage management tasks that typically plague IT administrators.
- Cyber-Resilience Integration: Their products are increasingly focused on the "Clean Room" recovery concept, providing isolated environments to scan and scrub data for ransomware before it is reintroduced to the production network.
- Appliance Flexibility: They offer a range of hardware options, from micro-appliances for small offices to enterprise-grade rackmount units, all managed through a single pane of glass.
Ideal Customer Profile
The ideal customer for Sky Data Vault typically fits the following profile:
- Company Size: Mid-market to Enterprise (50 to 5,000 employees).
- Industries: Highly regulated sectors such as Healthcare, Legal, Finance, Manufacturing, and Government.
- Technical Maturity: Organizations that have moved beyond basic file backup and recognize the need for a formal Disaster Recovery (DR) strategy but prefer a 'Managed' service over a 'Do-It-Yourself' tool.
- Budget: Companies that prioritize 'Cost of Downtime' over 'Cost of Storage.' They are willing to pay a premium for guaranteed RTOs and a managed service that reduces internal labor costs.
- Infrastructure: Hybrid environments with a mix of on-premises physical/virtual servers and SaaS applications like Microsoft 365.
Best Fit
Sky Data Vault excels in the following scenarios:
- Mission-Critical Recovery Time Objectives (RTO): When a business cannot afford more than an hour of downtime, SDV’s 'Ready-to-Run' cloud infrastructure provides near-instant failover.
- Ransomware Mitigation: For organizations seeking a 'clean' recovery environment. SDV focuses on air-gapped backups and immutable storage to ensure that even if the primary site is encrypted, the backup remains viable.
- Compliance-Heavy Industries: It is a top choice for healthcare (HIPAA) and finance (SEC/FINRA) firms that require not just storage, but a managed service provider that takes on the liability of ensuring data is recoverable and compliant.
- Lean IT Departments: When a company has a small IT team that lacks the bandwidth to manage daily backup logs, test restores, and hardware maintenance, SDV’s fully managed approach acts as an extension of the internal team.
Offerings
Sky Data Vault offers several distinct service tiers:
- Managed DRaaS (Ready-to-Run): The flagship offering. Includes an on-site appliance for local recovery and full cloud virtualization capabilities for total site failures.
- Managed Vaulting: A more economical tier focused on off-site data storage and long-term retention without the 'instant' virtualization features.
- SaaS Backup: Specialized protection for Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, protecting against accidental deletion and SaaS-level ransomware.

Introduction
Welcome to the Enterprise Buying Guide for Sky Data Vault (SDV). In an era where ransomware and hardware failures pose existential threats to business continuity, choosing a managed data protection partner is a critical strategic decision. Sky Data Vault differentiates itself by moving beyond simple "cloud backup" to provide a comprehensive Managed Disaster Recovery as a Service (mDRaaS) solution.
This guide is designed for IT directors, CIOs, and Managed Service Providers (MSPs) who need to understand how SDV integrates into their current infrastructure. You will learn about their "Ready-to-Run" philosophy, which prioritizes recovery speed over mere data storage. We will explore the technical requirements, pricing structures, and specific use cases that make Sky Data Vault a leader in the mid-market and enterprise data protection space, helping you determine if their managed approach aligns with your organization’s risk profile and operational goals.
Key Features
Sky Data Vault provides a suite of features focused on resiliency and managed performance:
- Managed DRaaS (Disaster Recovery as a Service): Unlike self-service tools, SDV manages the entire process, from initial backup to full system virtualization in the cloud during a disaster.
- Ready-to-Run Cloud: A proprietary cloud infrastructure where failed servers can be 'spun up' as virtual machines in minutes, allowing business operations to continue while local hardware is repaired.
- Ransomware Protection & Immutability: Utilizes 'Logic-Gap' technology and immutable storage buckets to ensure that backup data cannot be deleted or encrypted by malicious actors.
- Automated Verification: Daily automated testing of backups to ensure they are bootable, with reporting provided to the customer to prove recoverability.
- Hybrid Appliance Options: On-premises appliances provide local recovery for quick file restores, while simultaneously replicating data to the SDV cloud for off-site protection.
- Infinite Retention Policies: Options for long-term data archiving that meet specific regulatory requirements (7 years, 10 years, or permanent).
Use Cases
- Scenario 1: Ransomware Recovery for a Medical Clinic. A clinic's local servers are encrypted. SDV identifies the last 'clean' backup from their immutable vault and virtualizes the clinic's Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system in the SDV cloud within 4 hours, allowing patient care to continue.
- Scenario 2: Hardware Failure in Manufacturing. A critical SQL server controlling a production line suffers a motherboard failure. Using the on-site SDV appliance, the IT team performs a 'Local Instant Recovery,' running the server off the backup appliance while waiting for replacement parts.
- Scenario 3: SaaS Protection for a Law Firm. A disgruntled employee deletes years of case files from SharePoint and empties the trash. SDV’s M365 protection allows the firm to restore the entire folder structure to its original state in minutes.
- Scenario 4: Compliance Archiving for Finance. A financial services firm must keep 7 years of data. SDV provides a managed archival tier that automatically moves older data to low-cost, long-term storage while keeping it searchable for auditors.
Pricing Models
Sky Data Vault typically operates on a predictable, monthly recurring revenue (MRR) model:
- Capacity-Based Pricing: Costs are primarily driven by the amount of protected data (per TB) and the number of server instances/workstations.
- Tiered Service Levels: Pricing varies based on the required RTO. 'Vaulting' (standard backup) is the baseline, while 'Ready-to-Run' (instant virtualization) carries a premium.
- Appliance Costs: Depending on the agreement, the on-site hardware appliance may be purchased upfront or provided as a monthly lease (Hardware-as-a-Service).
- No Egress Fees: Unlike public cloud providers (AWS/Azure), SDV generally does not charge for data egress during a recovery event, making total cost of ownership (TCO) more predictable.
- M365/SaaS Pricing: Usually priced on a per-user, per-month basis.
Technical Requirements
The SDV environment requires the following technical environment:
- Local Appliance: A dedicated physical or virtual appliance (SDV Node) to act as the local cache and gateway.
- Internet Bandwidth: Minimum 10Mbps upload for small environments; 100Mbps+ recommended for enterprise-scale replication.
- Network Access: Specific firewall ports (typically 443, 22, and proprietary backup ports) must be open for communication with the SDV Cloud.
- Hardware Compatibility: x86-based server architecture.
- Storage Environment: Support for SAN, NAS, and DAS configurations via standard protocols (iSCSI, NFS, SMB).
Business Requirements
To successfully adopt Sky Data Vault, organizations should meet the following business prerequisites:
- Stakeholder Buy-in on RTO/RPO: Leadership must define acceptable Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) to ensure the SDV solution is tiered correctly.
- Designated Technical Point of Contact: While SDV manages the heavy lifting, an internal admin is needed to coordinate local hardware placement and provide network topology details.
- Data Prioritization: Business units must categorize 'Tier 1' (mission-critical) vs. 'Tier 2' (archival) data to optimize costs and recovery speed.
- Disaster Recovery Policy: An existing (or willingness to develop) DR plan that outlines who declares a disaster and the chain of command during an outage.
- Change Management: A process to notify SDV when major infrastructure changes occur (e.g., adding new servers or changing IP schemes) to ensure backup continuity.
Implementation Timeline
A typical Sky Data Vault implementation spans 4 to 8 weeks:
- Discovery & Design (Week 1-2): Assessment of data volume, server environment, and networking requirements. Finalization of the Disaster Recovery plan.
- Hardware Deployment (Week 2-3): Shipping and physical installation of the on-site SDV appliance (for hybrid models).
- Initial Seeding (Week 3-5): The first full backup is performed. Large datasets may require 'base-lining' via a physical drive to avoid saturating internet bandwidth.
- Configuration & Verification (Week 5-6): Setting up backup schedules, retention policies, and cloud replication.
- DR Testing & Handover (Week 7-8): A formal 'Proof of Concept' recovery test to verify that systems spin up in the cloud as expected, followed by staff training.
Support Options
As a fully managed service, support is a primary component of the value proposition:
- 24/7/365 US-Based Support: Access to engineers who specialize in data recovery, not just general IT.
- Proactive Monitoring: The SDV team monitors backup success daily; if a job fails, they often begin remediation before the customer is even aware of the issue.
- White-Glove Recovery Assistance: In the event of a disaster, SDV engineers assist with the networking and virtualization of the environment in the cloud.
- Quarterly Business Reviews (QBRs): For enterprise clients, SDV provides regular reporting on backup health, storage trends, and compliance status.
- Comprehensive Knowledge Base: A self-service portal for minor file restores and administrative tasks.
Integration Requirements
Sky Data Vault is designed to be environment-agnostic but requires specific points of integration:
- Hypervisor Integration: Deep integration with VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V for agentless backups.
- Operating Systems: Support for all modern Windows Server versions, Linux distributions (RedHat, CentOS, Ubuntu), and legacy Unix environments.
- Application-Aware Backups: Pre-built connectors for Microsoft SQL Server, Exchange, and Active Directory to ensure transactional consistency.
- Cloud-to-Cloud Integration: Ability to protect SaaS data from Microsoft 365 (Email, OneDrive, SharePoint) and Google Workspace.
