Skywire: High-Speed Business Fiber & Microwave Internet Solutions
Skywire provides high-speed fiber and fixed wireless internet solutions for NYC businesses, specializing in rapid deployment and underserved commercial buildings.
Overview
Skywire (Skywire Networks) is one of the most active integrated telecommunications providers in the New York City metropolitan area. Founded to address the "digital divide" in commercial real estate, Skywire focuses on delivering high-speed, enterprise-grade internet, voice, and data services to businesses that have been historically underserved by traditional cable and telecommunications giants.
The company operates one of the largest fixed-wireless and fiber networks in New York, spanning across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and parts of New Jersey. Their primary service offering includes dedicated internet access (DIA), Ethernet private lines, and hosted voice-over-IP (VoIP) solutions. Skywire has built its reputation on its ability to reach buildings that other carriers cannot, utilizing a sophisticated network of over 1,000 "lit" buildings and hundreds of wireless hubs.
Skywire’s target audience ranges from small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) to large corporate offices, as well as property owners and developers looking to increase the value of their real estate assets. Since its inception, the company has strategically expanded its footprint by acquiring and integrating various regional ISPs, further solidifying its market presence. Today, Skywire is a critical piece of NYC’s digital infrastructure, specifically catering to industries such as media, finance, healthcare, and technology that require 99.99% uptime and low-latency connections. Their focus remains squarely on the urban commercial market, providing a localized alternative to national carriers like Verizon and Spectrum.
Positioning
Skywire positions itself as the "agile alternative" to the incumbent telecommunications giants. Their market strategy is built on the pillars of speed, reliability, and local expertise. In a market dominated by massive, slow-moving corporations, Skywire’s messaging emphasizes its ability to provide personalized service and rapid installation. They position themselves not just as a service provider, but as a specialized infrastructure partner for New York City’s commercial real estate sector.
Their competitive positioning strategy focuses on three key segments:
- The "Underserved" Business: Targeting companies in buildings where legacy carriers only offer low-speed copper or expensive, slow-to-install fiber.
- The "Mission Critical" Enterprise: Positioning their fixed wireless technology as the ultimate redundancy solution that provides a completely separate path from the street-level infrastructure used by competitors.
- The Property Owner: Marketing to landlords as a way to "future-proof" their buildings and attract high-quality tenants by offering superior connectivity options.
Skywire differentiates its brand through transparency and accountability. While larger competitors are often criticized for poor customer service and opaque billing, Skywire leverages its local presence to offer high-touch support and guaranteed Service Level Agreements (SLAs). Their brand voice is professional, reliable, and deeply rooted in the New York business community, often highlighting their role in the city's economic development.
Differentiation
Skywire’s product suite is engineered to solve the specific density and infrastructure challenges of New York City. Their primary differentiator is their hybrid delivery model, which seamlessly integrates a private fiber-optic backbone with advanced fixed wireless technology. This allows them to deliver symmetrical gigabit speeds even in historical or "off-net" buildings where traditional fiber trenching is cost-prohibitive or physically impossible.
Key technical advantages include:
- Rapid Deployment: Their fixed wireless technology enables "Instant-On" capabilities, providing enterprise-grade connectivity in as little as 3 to 5 business days.
- Redundancy and Diversity: Skywire offers true path diversity. By delivering a primary fiber connection and a secondary wireless connection (or vice versa), they provide a failover solution that is physically independent of the traditional underground copper or fiber conduits, protecting businesses against street-level outages or construction accidents.
- Symmetrical Bandwidth: Unlike cable providers, Skywire provides matched upload and download speeds, which is critical for cloud-based operations, VoIP, and heavy video conferencing.
- Targeted Real Estate Solutions: Their "Building Partnership Program" includes a suite of managed services for landlords, including building-wide Wi-Fi and IoT connectivity for smart building management systems.
By focusing on the "last mile" in the most complex urban environment in the world, Skywire’s products are optimized for high-interference, high-density scenarios where standard commercial internet often fails.
Ideal Customer Profile
The ideal Skywire customer is a mid-market to enterprise organization located within New York City (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, or parts of the Bronx and Staten Island). They typically have 20–500+ employees and operate in industries where internet downtime results in significant revenue loss, such as Finance, Law, Creative Agencies, Tech Startups, and Healthcare. They are often located in "B" or "C" class commercial buildings where fiber is not pre-installed, or they are in "A" class buildings seeking a secondary, physically diverse path to ensure 100% uptime. This customer values speed of deployment and local responsiveness over the brand name of a national carrier.
Best Fit
Skywire is the premier choice for:
- New York City-Based Businesses: Companies located in Manhattan, Brooklyn, or Queens that require high-speed connectivity in buildings where traditional fiber providers have long lead times or limited port availability.
- Rapid Deployment Scenarios: Organizations moving into new offices within 30 days that cannot wait for the typical 60-90 day fiber construction cycles of national carriers.
- Redundancy & Business Continuity: Enterprises that already have a terrestrial fiber line (like Verizon or Spectrum) and need a physically diverse 'path-B' connection that enters the building via the roof rather than the street-level vault.
- Underserved Real Estate: Businesses operating in 'digital deserts' or older industrial buildings where legacy copper is the only other option.
Offerings
Skywire offers several distinct tiers of service:
- Dedicated Internet Access (DIA): Their flagship enterprise product. Guaranteed symmetric speeds with a 1:1 contention ratio. Ideal for primary office connectivity.
- Fixed Wireless Broadband: High-speed connectivity delivered via microwave technology. Used for rapid deployment or as a diverse backup.
- Business Fiber: Direct fiber-to-the-suite in buildings where Skywire has already established a fiber lateral.
- Skywire 'Path B' Redundancy: A specialized package designed specifically to complement an existing terrestrial fiber connection, ensuring no single point of failure.
- Multi-Tenant Building Solutions: Wholesale-style packages for landlords looking to 'light up' their entire building as a tenant amenity.

Everything you need to evaluate Skywire — from features and pricing to implementation and security.
Introduction
Welcome to the Enterprise Buying Guide for Skywire Networks. In the competitive New York City commercial real estate market, reliable and fast connectivity is a utility as critical as electricity. Skywire Networks has positioned itself as one of the most significant 'Alt-Net' providers in the NYC metro area, specializing in high-capacity fixed wireless and fiber-optic broadband.
This guide is designed for IT Directors, CTOs, and Facilities Managers who are evaluating Skywire for primary internet access or as a strategic redundancy partner. You will learn about their unique 'over-the-air' fiber-equivalent technology, their rapid deployment capabilities in Manhattan and the outer boroughs, and how their infrastructure provides a physically diverse alternative to the 'Big Telco' monopolies. By the end of this guide, you will understand if Skywire’s NYC-centric footprint and specialized delivery model align with your organization’s connectivity and uptime requirements.
Key Features
Skywire’s value proposition is built on high-performance localized infrastructure:
- Hybrid Fiber-Wireless Network: Uses a "web" of rooftop microwave hubs connected to a private fiber backbone, ensuring high speeds (up to 10Gbps) without the need for street trenching.
- Symmetric Bandwidth: Unlike cable internet, Skywire provides equal upload and download speeds, which is essential for cloud backups, video conferencing, and hosting services.
- True Path Diversity: Because the signal is delivered via the roof, it is immune to street-level outages caused by water main breaks, manhole fires, or construction accidents that sever underground fiber.
- Low Latency Performance: Optimized for the NYC market, providing sub-10ms latency to major local data centers and peering points (like 111 8th Ave and 60 Hudson).
- Carrier-Grade SLAs: Guaranteed uptime (typically 99.99%) with aggressive Mean Time to Repair (MTTR) metrics backed by local NYC-based field technicians.
- Scalability: Bandwidth can often be upgraded via a simple software configuration change without needing a truck roll.
Use Cases
- The 'Day 1' Office Move: A high-growth tech startup moves into a SoHo loft. The incumbent carrier quotes 4 months for fiber. Skywire installs a 500Mbps symmetric link in 14 days, allowing the company to open on schedule.
- The Resilient Law Firm: A Midtown law firm requires 100% uptime for trial discovery. They use Verizon FIOS as their primary link and Skywire Fixed Wireless as their secondary. When a street construction crew cuts the fiber optic line in the vault, the firm stays online via the rooftop Skywire link.
- Media & Production: A production house in Long Island City needs to upload 4K video files to the cloud. They switch from a cable provider (with 35Mbps upload) to Skywire's 1Gbps symmetric service, reducing upload times from hours to minutes.
- Hospitality/Events: A pop-up event space in Brooklyn needs high-density Wi-Fi for 500 attendees. Skywire provides a temporary high-capacity microwave link for the duration of the event.
Pricing Models
Skywire typically utilizes a contract-based monthly recurring charge (MRC) model:
- Tiered Bandwidth Pricing: Costs are primarily driven by the committed information rate (CIR), ranging from 100Mbps to 10Gbps.
- Installation Fees (NRC): A one-time setup fee is common, which covers the cost of rooftop equipment and internal cabling. This may be waived for longer-term (36+ month) contracts.
- Service Level Tiers: Different pricing for 'Best Effort' vs. 'Dedicated' internet access (DIA). Most enterprise clients should opt for DIA.
- Contract Lengths: Standard terms are 12, 24, or 36 months. Longer terms significantly reduce the MRC.
- Building Status: If a building is already "Skywire On-Net," pricing is significantly lower than "Near-Net" buildings requiring new equipment.
Technical Requirements
To support Skywire's handoff, your facility must meet these specs:
- Rooftop Access: Clear Line-of-Sight to one of Skywire’s hub sites (Manhattan/Brooklyn/Queens/Jersey City).
- Cabling (Riser): Availability of CAT6 or Fiber (SMF/MMF) from the roof to your server room.
- Rack Space: 1U to 2U of space for the Skywire indoor unit (IDU) or managed router.
- Environment: Climate-controlled space for indoor equipment with standard 110V power.
- Hardware: A firewall or router capable of handling the contracted throughput (e.g., don't order 1Gbps if your firewall only supports 500Mbps UTM).
Business Requirements
To successfully implement Skywire services, organizations should prepare the following:
- Building Management Liaison: Since Skywire often utilizes Fixed Wireless (microwave) technology, you will need a point of contact with building management to secure roof rights and riser access.
- IT Infrastructure Readiness: Your internal network team must be ready to hand off to a standard Ethernet interface (RJ45 or SFP).
- Power Requirements: Standard AC power must be available at the demarcation point and potentially near the rooftop equipment.
- Stakeholder Alignment: Facilities and IT must collaborate on the physical path of the cabling from the roof to the server room.
- Contractual Authority: Ensure the person signing has the authority to grant Skywire permission to install equipment on the building's exterior if the building is not already 'Skywire Lit.'
Implementation Timeline
Skywire is known for significantly faster deployment than traditional telcos:
- Phase 1: Site Survey (Days 1-3): Technicians visit the site to verify Line-of-Sight (LoS) for wireless or check existing fiber entry points.
- Phase 2: Engineering & Permitting (Days 4-10): Finalizing the design and securing necessary "Right of Entry" (ROE) from the landlord.
- Phase 3: Installation (Days 11-20): Physical installation of the microwave dish or fiber termination, cabling to the suite, and hardware mounting.
- Phase 4: Testing & Handover (Days 21-25): Throughput testing, latency verification, and handoff of IP assignments to the client.
- Go-Live: Typically within 30 days, compared to the 90+ days often required for sub-surface fiber construction.
