TeraGo: High-Performance Managed Network & Cloud Solutions
TeraGo provides managed network and cloud services to Canadian businesses, specializing in fixed wireless access, private cloud, and data center solutions.
Overview
TeraGo Inc. is a leading Canadian managed services provider that delivers a comprehensive suite of networking, cloud, and connectivity solutions tailored specifically for the enterprise and small-to-medium business (SMB) markets. Headquartered in Thornhill, Ontario, and publicly traded on the TSX, the company has established a significant national footprint, owning and operating a carrier-grade network that spans major Canadian markets including Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton.
TeraGo’s core business revolves around three primary pillars: Connectivity, Cloud, and Managed Services. They are most notably recognized for their extensive licensed fixed wireless spectrum, which enables them to provide high-speed, reliable internet access to thousands of business locations across Canada. In addition to wireless and fiber connectivity, TeraGo operates premium data center facilities and offers a robust private cloud platform, allowing businesses to outsource their infrastructure management entirely.
Founded in 1999, TeraGo has evolved from a pure-play wireless internet service provider into a holistic IT partner. Their target audience includes mid-market enterprises, government agencies, and financial institutions that require high-availability infrastructure and local data residency. By maintaining control over both the network and the cloud environment, TeraGo provides a unified service experience that simplifies the complexity of modern digital transformation for Canadian organizations.
Positioning
TeraGo positions itself as the premier "Canadian Alternative" to the large national incumbent telecommunications companies. Their strategic positioning is built on the concept of being "Big enough to deliver, small enough to care." They target organizations that have outgrown basic retail-grade internet but find the massive national carriers too bureaucratic, slow, or impersonal to deal with.
In the market, TeraGo occupies the space between niche regional players and massive multi-service conglomerates. Their messaging emphasizes three core pillars:
- Agility and Speed: Positioning their fixed wireless technology as the fastest way to get a business online with high-capacity bandwidth.
- Redundancy and Resilience: Focusing on the "always-on" enterprise, where TeraGo provides the necessary secondary path (wireless) to ensure business continuity if a primary fiber line is cut.
- Canadian Sovereignty: Leveraging their domestic ownership and local data centers to appeal to organizations with strict data privacy and residency requirements (PIPEDA compliance).
Compared to competitors like Bell or Rogers, TeraGo differentiates by focusing exclusively on business customers. They do not offer consumer cell phone plans or home television; every part of their infrastructure is optimized for B2B traffic. This "business-only" focus allows them to position their brand as a specialized partner that understands the high-stakes nature of enterprise uptime and technical support.
Differentiation
The primary product differentiator for TeraGo is its status as one of Canada’s largest holders of 24GHz and 38GHz fixed wireless spectrum. This allows them to provide "fiber-like" speeds and reliability via wireless technology, which is a critical differentiator for businesses requiring rapid deployment, diverse path redundancy, or connectivity in areas where trenching fiber is cost-prohibitive. Unlike standard microwave solutions, TeraGo’s licensed spectrum ensures interference-free, carrier-grade performance.
Beyond connectivity, TeraGo’s product suite is unique in its integration of private and hybrid cloud services directly into the network backbone. Their cloud offerings are built on enterprise-grade VMware stacks, providing a seamless transition for businesses looking to migrate workloads without the latency or complexity of the public internet. Key technical advantages include:
- Diverse Path Redundancy: Using fixed wireless as a physically diverse backup to terrestrial fiber to ensure 100% network availability.
- Geographic Sovereignty: All data remains within Canadian borders across their national data center footprint, ensuring compliance with strict Canadian data residency laws.
- SD-WAN Integration: A sophisticated SD-WAN layer that intelligently manages traffic across wireless and wireline assets to optimize application performance.
- Rapid Provisioning: The ability to stand up high-speed business internet in days rather than the weeks or months typically required for fiber construction.
Ideal Customer Profile
The ideal TeraGo customer is a Canadian-based or Canadian-operating enterprise that views connectivity and data residency as mission-critical.
- Company Size: Mid-market to large enterprises (50 to 5,000+ employees) or multi-location retail/branch networks.
- Industry Focus: Financial services, healthcare, legal, government, construction, and manufacturing.
- Technical Maturity: Organizations that require high availability and are moving toward hybrid cloud or SD-WAN architectures.
- Geographic Footprint: Businesses with operations in major Canadian urban centers (Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Vancouver, etc.) and those in the "near-urban" periphery where fiber may be cost-prohibitive or slow to install.
- Budget: Organizations that prioritize reliability and SLAs over the lowest-cost "best effort" consumer-grade internet.
- Team Composition: Likely has an internal IT team but looks to outsource the complexity of network diversity and cloud infrastructure management.
Best Fit
TeraGo is the best fit for organizations in the following scenarios:
- Multi-Site Canadian Operations: Businesses with multiple locations across Canada that require a single network partner to provide consistent high-speed connectivity via a mix of fiber and fixed wireless.
- Disaster Recovery & Redundancy: Companies that already have fiber but need a physically diverse secondary path. TeraGo’s fixed wireless is the gold standard for 'true' redundancy because it does not share the same underground trenches as traditional fiber.
- Rapid Deployment Needs: Businesses opening new sites or temporary locations that cannot wait the typical 60–90 days for fiber construction. TeraGo can often deploy fixed wireless in a fraction of that time.
- Sovereignty-Conscious Data Storage: Organizations in regulated sectors (finance, legal, healthcare) that must ensure their data remains on Canadian soil and is managed by a domestically owned and operated provider.

- Retail (Managed SD-WAN): A national retail chain uses TeraGo Managed SD-WAN to prioritize Point-of-Sale (POS) traffic over guest Wi-Fi across 50 locations, ensuring sales are never interrupted by network congestion.
- Healthcare (DRaaS): A regional hospital uses TeraGo’s Disaster Recovery as a Service to maintain real-time replicas of patient databases, ensuring immediate failover in the event of a local server failure or ransomware attack.
Pricing Models
TeraGo typically employs a contractual, monthly recurring revenue (MRR) model:
- Connectivity Pricing: Based on bandwidth (Mbps/Gbps), delivery method (Wireless vs. Fiber), and contract length (typically 3 or 5 years). Fixed wireless often carries a lower installation cost than custom fiber builds.
- Cloud & DRaaS: Priced based on resource consumption—vCPU, RAM, and Storage (GB/TB)—along with licensing fees for backup software (e.g., Zerto).
- Colocation: Based on rack space (U-space, half-rack, or full cabinet) and power consumption (kW), often with additional fees for "cross-connects" to other carriers.
- Managed Services: Flat monthly fees per device (e.g., per SD-WAN edge) or per site.
- One-time Costs: Initial setup fees, site surveys, and specialized hardware installation.
- Drivers of Cost: Bandwidth requirements, the complexity of the managed security stack, and the required Service Level Agreement (SLA) tier.
Technical Requirements
To deploy TeraGo services, the following technical environment is required:
- Rooftop Access (Wireless): For fixed wireless, a clear Line-of-Sight (LoS) to a TeraGo base station is required. The building must support a small mast or non-penetrating roof mount.
- Power Requirements: Standard AC power for indoor equipment (CPE/Routers). Colocation clients must specify 120V or 208V requirements.
- Cabling: Cat5e/Cat6 or Fiber (Single Mode/Multi-Mode) cabling from the roof or demarc point to the internal server room.
- Hardware Compatibility: If not using TeraGo managed routers, your edge device must support Ethernet handoff and standard routing protocols (Static or BGP).
- Cloud Requirements: For TeraGo Cloud, workloads should ideally be compatible with VMware environments for the smoothest migration (though other formats can be imported).
