Key Features
Veeam Data Platform provides a comprehensive suite of capabilities focused on 'Data Freedom' and 'Cyber Resiliency':
- Instant VM Recovery: The pioneer of this technology, Veeam allows you to run a failed VM directly from a backup file on the backup storage, achieving RTOs of minutes.
- Veeam Explorers: Granular recovery tools for Microsoft Exchange, SQL, SharePoint, Active Directory, and Oracle, allowing you to recover individual emails, tables, or objects without a full VM restore.
- SureBackup & SureReplica: Automated recovery verification that boots backups in an isolated sandbox to test for heartbeat, networking, and application readiness.
- Immutable Backups: Protection against ransomware through 'Object Lock' in the cloud or Hardened Linux Repositories on-premises, preventing data from being encrypted or deleted.
- Cloud-Native Data Protection: Specialized backup for AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud that utilizes native snapshots while providing off-cloud redundancy.
- Direct Restore to Cloud: The ability to take an on-premises backup and restore it directly as an AWS EC2 instance or Azure VM, facilitating easy migrations and DR.
- Veeam ONE: Advanced monitoring, reporting, and capacity planning to identify unprotected VMs and optimize backup performance.
Use Cases
- Enterprise Disaster Recovery: A global manufacturer uses Veeam to replicate critical VMs from their primary data center to a secondary site. Using Veeam Recovery Orchestrator, they can execute a one-click failover of their entire ERP system during an outage.
- Ransomware Recovery: A healthcare provider was hit by ransomware. Because they used Veeam's Hardened Linux Repository, their backups remained untouched. They used 'Instant VM Recovery' to bring their patient records back online in under 30 minutes.
- Multi-Cloud Mobility: A tech startup uses Veeam to back up their on-premises development environment and 'Direct Restore' those workloads into AWS for production scaling, effectively using Veeam as a migration tool.
- SaaS Protection: A financial services firm uses Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 to ensure they have 7-year retention on all executive emails and Teams chats to meet regulatory compliance, which exceeds Microsoft's standard 30-day recycle bin.
Pricing Models
Veeam has transitioned primarily to a portable subscription model:
- Veeam Universal License (VUL): This is a per-workload, portable license. One VUL credit can protect one VM, one physical server, three workstations, or 500GB of NAS data. This allows customers to move licenses as they migrate from on-premises to the cloud.
- Subscription Tiers:
- Foundation: Core Backup & Replication.
- Advanced: Backup & Replication plus Veeam ONE (Monitoring).
- Premium: The full platform, including Backup & Replication, Veeam ONE, and Veeam Recovery Orchestrator for automated DR testing.
- Microsoft 365 & Salesforce: These are typically licensed on a per-user, per-month basis.
- Cost Drivers: The primary drivers are the number of workloads (VMs/Servers) and the desired level of orchestration and monitoring. Organizations should also factor in the cost of their chosen storage hardware or cloud storage consumption.
Technical Requirements
Veeam is a Windows-based application, but it manages a wide variety of environments:
- Operating System: Veeam Backup & Replication must be installed on a 64-bit Windows Server (2012 R2 or later).
- Database: Requires a configuration database (PostgreSQL 15 is now the default/recommended, though SQL Server is supported).
- Hypervisors: VMware vSphere 7.0+, Microsoft Hyper-V 2012+, Nutanix AHV, and Red Hat Virtualization.
- Cloud: AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform accounts for cloud-native backup.
- Hardware: Minimum 4GB RAM + 2GB per concurrent job; multi-core CPU. Performance scales with the number of 'Backup Proxies' deployed.
- Network: 1GbE minimum; 10GbE recommended for large-scale data movements. Specific ports (e.g., 9392, 445, 6160) must be open between components.
Business Requirements
To successfully implement Veeam, organizations should consider the following:
- Infrastructure Strategy: A clear understanding of your Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPOs) is necessary to configure backup frequencies and replication jobs.
- Storage Planning: Since Veeam is software-defined, you must provide the underlying storage. This requires a team capable of managing storage arrays or cloud buckets.
- Skill Sets: While the UI is intuitive, your IT team should have a baseline understanding of virtualization (VMware/Hyper-V) and networking (for VIX and proxy configurations).
- Change Management: Moving to Veeam often involves transitioning from legacy 'agent-based' backups to 'image-based' backups, requiring a shift in how backups are monitored and validated.
- Stakeholder Buy-in: Security teams must be involved to validate the '3-2-1-1-0' backup rule implementation and ensure immutability settings meet compliance standards.
Implementation Timeline
A typical Veeam implementation follows this trajectory:
- Phase 1: Discovery & Design (1-2 weeks): Inventory of workloads (VMs, physical servers, cloud instances), data volume assessment, and architectural design of the Veeam Backup & Replication server and Proxies.
- Phase 2: Environment Setup (1 week): Installation of the Veeam backup server, configuration of backup repositories (local or cloud), and deployment of backup proxies.
- Phase 3: Job Configuration (1-2 weeks): Creating backup jobs, setting retention policies, and configuring 'Backup Copy' jobs for offsite redundancy.
- Phase 4: Testing & Verification (1 week): Running 'SureBackup' jobs to automatically verify that backups are bootable and malware-free.
- Phase 5: Training & Go-Live (1 week): Finalizing documentation, training the operations team on restores, and officially moving to production status. Timeline varies based on total data volume and geographical distribution.
